Crowns
A crown ( or "cap") can return structure,
strength and function to a tooth with extensive decay or damage.
Made of porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic, it can also
help align the teeth. Your crown can be placed in just a couple
of short appointments.
Fixed Bridges
If you've lost a tooth because of injury, accident
or gum disease we can provide you with a bridge to restore
your smile, function, and prevent your other teeth from repositioning.
Most commonly, a bridge consists of a false tooth linked to
two neighbouring abutment crowns. If healthy adjacent abutment
teeth aren't available we may suggest a surgically-positioned
post called an implant as an alternative treatment. For a
bridge that replaces many teeth we may suggest a partial denture
or an implant-supported prosthesis.
Bonding
Bonding is a process dentists use to attach
tooth-coloured materials to tooth structure so that it is
non-removable. This enables the placement of sealants, fillings,
veneers and crowns.
Veneers
A veneer is a porcelain cover that is bonded
to the enamel of a tooth somewhat like an artificial fingernail.
Once bonded, it becomes a strong part of the tooth. Veneers
can be used to mask stains, misalignments and improve esthetics.
Mouthguards
Dentists recommend mouthguards for a variety
of sports including hockey, football, gymnastics and bike-riding.
Whitening
Tooth whitening is a safe, popular and effective
way to achieve a whiter smile. You may select an in-office
treatment just under 2 hours or try a take-home kit that can
give you a gleaming smile in about 2 weeks.
Intra-Oral Cameras
People seldom have an idea of the actual status
of their dental health. With the intra-oral cameras, an image
of your teeth is projected on the TV monitor and you can now
see what a dentist can!
Implants
Implants have been successfully placed for patients
for over 30 years. They are made of titanium because this
metal bonds directly to the jaw-bone and does not normally
get rejected by the body. In a two-phase procedure, the surgeon
will slowly prepare a hole in the jaw-bone, gently place the
implant and let it heal for about 3 months. Then the dentist
can place the crown, bridge, or denture overtop of the implant
resulting in a stable restoration. Implants look, feel and
function like natural teeth.
By imitating an entire natural tooth from the
root up, implants offer a prosthetic solution that closely
mimics nature. Strong and secure, your new smile will boost
your confidence, enhance your appearance and improve your
quality of life.
Periodontal Disease
This is a disease that 4 of 5 Canadians have
and is the greatest cause of tooth loss in adults. It begins
because of the bacteria present in plaque. When not removed,
the plaque forms hard calculus. The bacteria in plaque and
calculus form toxins that destroy the body's attachment to
the teeth leading to infections, loose teeth and then tooth
loss.
Contributing factors include smoking, genetics,
medications, stress, puberty, pregnancy, other systemic diseases
such as diabetes, and poor nutrition. Research suggests that
bacteria from periodontal disease may enter the blood stream,
create new infections and may increase your risk for heart
disease! Research shows that this may also provide an increased
risk of stroke, pose a serious threat to those already suffering
from diabetes, respiratory diseases or osteoporosis. It may
also increase a woman's risk of having a pre-term, low birth-weight
baby.
Treatment for periodontal disease includes:
- Non-surgical hygiene therapy
- Regular prescribed hygiene maintenance care
- Periodontal surgery
- Pocket reduction procedures
- Regenerative procedures
- Crown lengthening
- Soft tissue grafting
