Learn about the modern cosmetic treatments available for patients in Guelph, ON who want a more attractive set of teeth.

Why Is Cosmetic Dentistry So Popular?

A smile is a way of telling someone we’re happy, we’re pleased to be in their company, or that we’re having a good time. It’s a greeting and an important social cue. So if you feel like you have to hide your teeth from others, it can affect how you interact with the world. Cosmetic dentistry allows people with even the most discolored or damaged teeth to see a smile improvement, which is why it’s so popular in dentist offices across the country.

Cosmetic Services

Here are some of the most common treatments that cosmetic dentists offer:

  • Invisible braces (straightens up the smile using clear removable trays).
  • Veneers (cover the front of the teeth to make them look whiter, straighter, and smoother).
  • Crowns (cover the whole outer enamel of an imperfect tooth).
  • Professional teeth whitening (bleaches the teeth so they look shades whiter).
  • Dental implants (permanent tooth replacements).
  • Gum surgery (to fix “gummy” smiles).
  • Cosmetic fillings (fixes cavities with tooth-colored matter).
  • Cosmetic bonding and contouring (for minor cracks and chips in the teeth).

Veneers

Veneers can be used to improve the look of your teeth by changing their colour, shape, angle, or spacing. At Eramosa dental, we pride ourselves in improving the esthetics of broken, chipped, cracked, and/or discoloured teeth, in order to improve your smile and give you more confidence.

Veneers are commonly made out of porcelain or composite. Porcelain veneers are stronger and do not stain or change colour over time. However, porcelain veneers take at least 2 visits to the dentist. Composite veneers are quick, easy, and affordable, but can stain and/or chip over time. If you have noticeable imperfections, we can discuss the options that are appropriate for you, in order to get you the smile you deserve!

Teeth Whitening

The natural colour of teeth lies within a range of light greyish-yellow shades. There are two main types of discoloration: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic discoloration is associated with the properties of the enamel and dentin, such as the use of certain antibiotics, fever, or trauma during teeth development. Most of the time, these discolorations cannot be corrected by dental bleaching alone, and may require other cosmetic procedures, such as crowns or veneers. Extrinsic discoloration, on the other hand, is mainly caused by the accumulation of surface stains from products such as tobacco, wine, coffee, and tea. This type of discoloration is easily improved via use of various bleaching/whitening products.

Most bleaching products are peroxide-based, and the effectiveness can depend on multiple factors such as the concentration, time in contact with teeth, as well as duration of treatment. Tooth sensitivity and soft tissue irritation may also occur during bleaching treatment, but these effects are transient.

At Eramosa Dental, we offer both in-office as well as take-home whitening systems. The key to successful whitening is to have consistent treatment under the care of a trained dental team. If you are interested in having a brighter, whiter smile, please ask our office for more details regarding whitening procedures and available promotions.
