Gum Disease

Gum disease can generally be categorized into two groups, based on its advancement: gingivitis or periodontitis. In gingivitis, inflammation and gum disease is confined to the gum area, whereas in periodontitis, the disease process has spread, resulting in bone loss. The majority of patients with gum disease have mild to no pain or discomfort. However, when pain is present, it usually indicates that the disease process is quite advanced.

Depending on the condition of your gums, our dental staff may recommend re-care appointments of different durations. For those with mild gum disease, a re-care interval of 6 months may be sufficient, whereas for those with advanced gum disease, patients may benefit from re-care appointments every 3 months. Our dental team will formulate a re-care interval that is appropriate for you in an attempt to improve and maintain your gum health.

It has been discovered that oral health is linked to systemic health. For example, there is a direct correlation between diabetes and gum disease: those with advanced diabetes suffer from a more aggressive form of gum disease, and those with bad oral hygiene and severe gum disease have a harder time maintaining their blood sugars. Furthermore, studies have shown a link between advanced gum disease and negative impacts on the cardiovascular system.
